Hey Y'all!

Hope you all had a merry Christmas. New Years is this Weekend-- hope you have a merry one of those too. This is just a quick update with some quick news. Look for a longer update sometime early in 2012.

First item!

TONY FLEECS AT THE AMAZING ARIZONA COMIC CON!

OK. So I'll be at next weekend's AMAZING ARIZONA COMIC CON. (Details below.) I'll be splitting a table with my mostly-hetero-life-mate Joshua Hale Fialkov (who many of you may know as the writer of DC comics' 2nd most beloved vampire comic, I, Vampire.) My name's not on the website because Josh is the famous one but I'll be there. Come on out and buy some stuff!

Wondering what Dos Santos has been up to? Well wonder no more. Smarter Comics has just released his newest project, 60 pages, full color-- an adaptation of Miyamoto Musashi's classic THE BOOK OF 5 RINGS. You buy a copy here-- in print or on whichever digital device you prefer.

Pretty much the whole studio's doing some kind of work for the guys at Smarter Comics, so look to hear plenty more about them in the future. (Hey Look! Chris Moreno did one too!)

Some of us, like Mark Dos Santos and yours truly were set up on the con floor, pimping their wares, kissing hands and shaking babies. New Moreno Stuff!

What's up, GAS-ers! New Moreno stuff to report. First up, I illustrated some Celebrity Pokemon Evolutions for the fine folks at UGO.com. See what happens when our favorite celebs when they undergo massive transformations. I'd insert some Charlie Sheen catchphrase here, but, honestly, I'm so over that shit already.

Also, I'm providing the art for one of the newest offerings from SmarterComics, a company that's adapting some of the hottest self-help/financial/business books into comics form. It's called The 80-20 Principle by Richard Koch. Originally a global bestseller, translated into over 26 languages, it's now making the jump into comics form. I've always been a big supporter of comics' ability to inform as well as entertain, and this is something I'm very excited to be a part of. And finally, don't forget that the debut comic of my creator-owned Zombie Dickheads is still available in the Zombie Bomb, Vol. 4: Dark Daze anthology from Terminal Press. Lots happening at the studio. Tone's working on another Bongo book right now (he's got 2 on the way.) Moreno's buried in comics as-usual. I'm doing layouts for the upcoming Fleecs/Fialkov/Oni book and writing the 2nd issue of the upcoming Fleecs/ToneRodriguez book (What!?). Dos Santos is off doing god-knows-what... He lives out in the boonies and I haven't seen him in a little bit. I'm sure whatever it is is great.

Zombie Dickheads!

ITEM! Chris Moreno's newest creator owned masterpiece debuts in the next issue of Terminal Press' Zombie Bomb anthology. I have read it and I can say without hesitation that it's his best work to date. Definitely worth searching out when the book drops.

Chris has been posting some process stuff over at his Deviantart. Here's a look at some of that.

Marvel Heroes and Villains Trading Cards

The newest Marvel/Rittenhouse card set came out recently, it features rare sketch cards from all the guys in the studio. Head out to your local comics and cards shop or hobby shop or whatever and pick up a box- every box has an original sketch inside... Some of those original sketches are by us. OR hit up ebay and search for us over there.

We've all got Artist Proof cards from the Heroes and Villains set. If you're interested in commissioning one of us to draw on an artist proof card for you, all you have to do is ask... and then pay money...

So, Moreno's still on the east coast recovering from last week's NYCC. But if he were here, I'm sure he'd want you to know that his new IDW book, (an adaptation/update of the "classic" 1980 Rory Calhoun film of the same name) is in stores this week! And that you should all go buy it. And that he thinks Tony Fleecs is the most handsome artist in comics. And if you don't live near a comic book store, I'm sure Chris'd want you to go online and get yourself a copy that way.

So that book's coming out in January and in an surprising and humbling (not that I can handle too much more humbling) move, the folks at Archie & Hero decided to use my cover for the cover of the whole book.

Cool, right? Make sure to pick up the book in January. Inside you'll find amazing work by John Romita, Joseph Michael Linsner, George Perez, Cliff Chiang, Joe Jusko, Sam Kieth and many more. Support the Initiative, they do good work for a good cause.

Ok, convention fans, get ready to for a maximum dosage of G.A.S. this weekend and the next! That's right, we're leaving the confines of the Cali garage and spreading our sickness East. Like the Oregon Trail, except in reverse.

First up, the lovely Lauren Perry and I will be heading to Baltimore, MD for the Baltimore Comicon! It's gonna be jam-packed with comic book stars-- and hey, we'll be there, too!

Lauren's got a metric butt ton of new Blank-ees, a brand new batch of the cutest little pop art paintings of your favorite characters you've ever seen! Here's but a sampling-- see if you can guess each one!

I'll be unveiling 4 new prints, promoting my brand-new project, Zombie Dickheads, which will be debuting in the new Zombie Bomb anthology from Terminal Press. Each one features a different member of the titular dickheads. Here's a sneak peak:

The following weekend, we'll be joined in Atlanta, GA by the rest of the G.A.S. crew, Tone, Tony, and Mark, for Dragon Con-- one of the premiere congregations of like-minded geeks in the country! Just a quick note to invite you all out this weekend to Pasadena for the first ever ROCK'N COMIC CON. Garage Art Studio will be represented there by Tony Fleecs (author of In My Lifetime, Johnny Wadd and whatnot,) Tone Rodriguez (most recently of ShadowHawk Resurrection fame) and Lauren Perry with her delightful Blank-ees (which are not blankets.) And along for the ride just for good measure is our good buddy Josh Fialkov (with copies of his and Noel Tuazon's Tumor, hot off the press!)

Violent Messiahs guest stars on 90210!

Hey folks!

So, unbeknownst to us at the studio, Tone Rodriguez' Violent Messiahs ran off and booked herself a starring role on the CW's new 90210 (That makes this episode my 3rd favorite 90210 episode of all time, behind the one where Steve Sanders' buddy accidentally shoots himself in the face and the one where Dylan's outgoing answering machine message says, "It's Dylan. You know what to do."). [Edit: I've been reminded that it was David Silver's buddy, NOT Steve Sanders' who accidentally shot himself in the face. Thanks Heidi.]

Violent Messiahs: Lamenting Pain #2 shows up 11 minutes into 90210 Season 2, Episode 13. The episode is titled, "Rats and Heroes."

“ARCHIE COVERS: FIFTY TIMES AN AMERICAN ICON”

50 new Archie covers by 50 great artists will benefit Hero Initiative

Los Angeles, CA (March 24, 2010): Archie and the whole Riverdale gang certainly are heroes. Now they’re joining forces to aid cartoonists in need.

Archie Comics is teaming up with the Hero Initiative, the charity dedicated to helping comic creators in medical or financial need, for an amazing artistic extravaganza involving the premier issue of the world-renowned Archie wedding series, Archie #600. Archie Comics has printed 50 blank-covered copies of the landmark book, and Hero will have 50 stellar artists do original Archie covers on the special edition books. The originals will be auctioned off at a later date to benefit Hero, and a book will be published, collecting all 50 covers.

Superstar artists such as Neal Adams, Darwyn Cooke, Sam Kieth, Jerry Ordway, George Pérez, John Romita, Tim Sale and more are all contributing to the project, “Archie Covers: Fifty Times an American Icon.” More artistic surprises are yet in store, as artists from the animation world and even underground comics will be making contributions as well!

“I’ve been in comics for 35 years, and this is the first chance I’ve had to draw Archie ‘for real,’” said legendary Marvel/DC artist and Hero board member George Pérez. “And given that opportunity, I’d be foolish not to draw the stunning Betty and Veronica as well! It’s a lot of fun, a great opportunity, and of course, a great cause. I hope everyone enjoys these covers!”

“Archie Comics is committed to supporting those who have spent their lives as the cornerstone of the comics industry. We are thrilled to be working with the Hero Initiative on this project,” remarks Co-CEO Jon Goldwater. “The covers have been remarkable and we can’t wait to see what the remaining artists have in store for their edition of the Hero covers for Archie #600.”

Each original cover will be auctioned off via eBay.com at a future date. A release date for the book is also pending. Stay tuned! You will not want to miss out on these amazing once-in-a-lifetime covers!

Tony Fleecs' New Blog - New art every day!

Hey Garage Art-keteers! Tony Fleecs here with a story.

About a year ago this month I was broke-- really broke and I did one of the dumbest/most popular things I've ever done. I went online and offered commission sketches on 3x5" cards for $3. The response was amazing. I received hundreds of sketch orders and I was able to pay my ridiculous Hollywood rent for a couple of months. I worked tirelessly on the cards for as long as the money lasted and then-- I had to move on to new work to pay the next rent. The plan was to keep drawing the cards full-time while I worked on all my other stuff... That plan was also stupid and failed almost immediately.

So for the past few months I've worked on all kinds of stuff and haven't been able to time manage myself enough to get any of these cards done. And I've disappointed all the people who saved my butt all those months ago.

Well- I'm doing something about it. I can't stop working on my real jobs but I can do at least ONE of these cards per day. At least, that's the plan.

1 a day. 1 sketch drawn and posted every day for hundreds of days-- or until I reach the end of this enormous list.

PREVIEWS, SIMPSONS, ShadowHawk and The STUDIO

...it has been some time since my last blog, and so much has happened. I'm currently working on a few books, a couple of new SIMPSONS stories, and all sorts of good stuff.

The current Simpsons story is for this year's TREE HOUSE OF HORROR, its a story written by LEMMY of MOTORHEAD, i have already done the thumbs and just started working on the pages its a great short story, i also have another short for this spring, so i have a bunch of Simpsons Art to get to.

One of the things I'm very excited about is ShadowHawk RESURRECTION! I have been waiting a long time to draw a Super-Hero book and i'm happy to say that ShadowHawk gets to be my first Super-Hero book. you can see some advanced pages in the March Issue of PREVIEWS, i was surprised to see my ISSUE ONE cover art all over the magazine. it was a HOOT!!! If we can add some pictures on this post i will.

The studio is busy, both Tony and Chris are working hard on their various projects, and Lauren is hard at work on making arrangements for my birthday get together later this week. Yeah another year goes by and the end of the first week of March marks the beginning and the end of my year. Anyways I know it's only taken you about five minutes to read this, but I've been sitting in front of this computer for well over an hour, so maybe ill save something for next weeks blog...talk with you later.

After a brief, two year hiatus, I've returned to my webcomic Dysfunctianimals! What are Dysfunctianimals? Well, have you ever looked at a flock of birds, a pack of wolves, or a herd of cows, and seen one that's standing just outside the group? Not old or sick, just a little out of place? That's a Dysfunctianimal. Maybe they're shy, awkward, withdrawn, antisocial, or even violent-- in other words, they're a little bit like you or me. Dysfunctianimals are proof that animals are people, too.

I'm gonna try and get back to regularly posting new strips. I made a New Year's resolution to do so, so you know that I'm dedicated.

I have an exciting announcement...My Blank-ees website (www.blank-ees.com) has officially gone live! woo hoo!! (I'm doing a happy dance right now, you just can't see me) Please check it out and let me know what you think. Feedback is always welcome and appreciated! Josh Wagner and Nick Beranek both worked extra hard to bring it into being and I am so grateful to them both.

Each week (starting next week) the website will feature a Blank-ee set of the week that you'll be able to buy at a discount. I'll be taking suggestions for sets of four characters, so if you really want to see a character I haven't painted yet, let me know! The website will also feature my upcoming appearances, pictures of people who have purchased Blank-ees, commissions I've done, and all kinds of other exciting stuff.

Ello, so what exactly is blog short for??? Well I, for one, have no idea, and thats cool... At this time it looks like we might only have one or two followers on here....but like not knowing what blog stands for, that's cool too.
I'm Tone Rodriguez, and I draw comic books and graphic novels. I have done work on comic books for Image, Top Cow, Bongo, Ape Ent. and Dark Horse. I have been doing this for ten years, and would hope to do this till the day I die. It's been a busy week here in THE STUDIO. My work-mates have been busy working on their various projects, and at the moment I'm working on some trading cards for Rittenhouse. The cards are for MARVEL'S 70th Anniversary...and they look pretty cool thus far.
The third issue of MAYHEM! just shipped this past week, and I'm getting ready to start work on my next project. I have some designs that I still have to finish up, as well as digging up some reference on a New York and Queens Skyline... But the thumbs are done and ready to start. I just needed to get on here and start my weekly blog. I'm also on TWITTER and FACEBOOK as well as MYSPACE, and as soon as I find someone I'll have my website updated, too. So keep an eye out at www.tonerod.com-- as well as this blog, of course.
So there ya go...my first blog. How AWESOME WAS THAT!?! GAS Represents for the Hero Initiative Wolvie #1 sketch cover auctions!

What's up, y'all? Chris Moreno here to let everyone know that the eBay auctions for the Hero Initiative's 100 Wolvie sketch covers is on like Donkey Kong! Fellow GAS-er, Tone Rodriguez, along with yours truly, contributed to this year's auctions, a follow-up to our showings for the Hulk and Spider-Man covers, respectively.

For mine, I started to do an ink drawing of the Ol' Canuckle-head going mad-ass on a bunch of Hand ninjas, but when I started laying it down the card stock on the cover repelled my ink like Brad Pitt fleeing a paparazzi! Not one to let rejection stop me from getting the job done (watch yourselves, people,) I decided to try markers. No dice. This Wolverine cover was playing hard to get! So I decided to change things up on it. I blew the dust off my acrylics and got to painting it up. At first, Wolvie was resistant, but once things got going, it started to loosen up a bit. Then we were really jammin'. Bingo-bango, nine months later, we gave birth to a bouncing baby painted cover.

Ok, so it's a little more than a sketch. Sue me. But it's already starting to rack up quite the pretty penny for the Hero Initiative, which is what's really important, because Hero gives financial aid and assistance to older comics creators, to help with medical expenses, bills, cost of living expenses, etc. It's our way of the industry giving back to those who've given us some of our favorite characters and stories, hours and hours of lazy afternoons lying on the back porch escaping into the realms of fantasy and adventure! I think a few bucks here and there is the least we could do, right?

So check out the link, and keep your eyes peeled-- this is only the first few covers being released with more on the way. Loads of super-cool, talented artists contributed to this project. Some guys you know, some you don't know too well, but all who've done some kickass art for a wonderful cause.
